Working with photo editing programs (lesson notes)

In the first IT lesson we started learning how to work with Adobe Bridge and how to adjust and edit images (correcting sharpness, exposure, changing the white balance) in camera raw. We been given a few images to practice on which made the learning process much easier. The first image that we practiced on was the little girl named Sophie's photo, we had to change the color setting so there are equal amount of green, red and blue in the picture, we started by taking color picker tool and selecting the part of the image that was the lightest which was the white, then we adjusted the RGB numbers to even out the green blue and red colors in the image, this method also corrected the exposure of the image making it more natural. After we were done editing this image we learnt how to save it so that later on we could open it and edit again, also we learnt how to save the adjustment setting that we made and apply them to other photos.

In the second lesson we started to learn working with program called InDesign, we were able to learn how to change the images from the hand in document template that we been given and swapping them with our own images while linking them to program Bridge, the images had to be .tif files this way if they get edited the images in the InDesign would update as well. I have took my images from the final shoot to practice how I could apply them using this method, and it worked fine, I was able to add my own images to the hand in document template which made me think that it is not as hard as I thought it will be.

In the third lesson we were taught how to create a mood board, which was also necessary for our assessment. To create mood boards we been told to use Photoshop program, we start by setting up the size of our page, to make it easier for us we could create guidelines where we want our images to go, which was much easier than doing it without the guidelines. For my images that I chose to be on the mood board, I picked plenty of gold themed pictures and I wanted them to be all different size and different length, I did not want a plain, simple looking mood board, I was going for more of a different and creative mood board look.

Final photoshoot - Retouched

Using Photoshop software I was able to bring out more shadows, light and hide the blemishes of my model. For the color images I have increased the light to create even more brighter look to the images, also increased the darkness/shadows to make the images sharper and not too lightened out. I have also slightly smoothed out the skin of my model and hidden the blemishes that were on my model's face and chest. I did not want to get rid of my model's facial lines as this can make it look too fake and unnatural. For the black and white images I have added more of a darkness/shadow feature to create more depth and darkness to the images by increasing the shadows. I have also smoothed out the skin slightly and hidden the blemishes that were on display, creating much more of a healthy skin look.

Final photoshoot - Un-retouched

For my final photo-shoot I chose gold as my one color to set the image off. I have brought a few gold jewelry for the model to wear for the photo-shoot, also I have asked my model to wear any top or jacket that was closest to the gold color as I wanted to make a statement for these images. I have asked the model to wear natural make up and make he hair slightly wavy to emphasize the natural beauty, rather than over done hair style and a lot of make up. I have added some illuminating make up product on my models cheeks to bring out the glow when the pictures are takes, to make her skin look very fresh, youthful and naturally beautiful. For the color images I have chose white background as I thought that it will create more of a contrast between white and gold, and it will not distract the viewer from the model and the detail, I have also used hard lighting with a high exposure dish light, I like the shadows that are behind the model as it gives more depth to the images and they don't look too over done I wanted to stick to the most natural techniques when creating these images. For the black and white images I chose grey background as I wanted the image to be a lot more darker and mysterious, I used soft box to create much more of a soft light and also low exposure to make the images much more darker and bring out the shadows even more.

Colour / Black and White

Test photoshoot

Soft lighting, underexposed, black background

Hard lighting, high exposure, grey background

Hard lighting, overexposed, white background

Soft Lighting, low exposure, grey background

Soft lighting, medium exposure, grey background

Hard lighting, overexposed, white background

I wanted to experiment with a few poses, different exposures and background to see which one is mostly suitable for the model. For my model I think white background looks the best when the image is over exposed and has hard lighting, white background does not distract the viewer from the model because the image is overexposed the background looks very light this way the other colors that my model has (gold) stand out which is the main color that I wanted to stand out. For the soft lighting images I think grey background looks the best as it very neutral and I think it compliments the model's skin as well as the gold color which seems to stand out even more.

Mood board - Archives

First mood-board

Second mood-board, images rearranged

The task was to write as many meanings and examples of the word that you have picked which also had to relate to university or the course that I was doing. I found this task extremely difficult as I did not have an idea of what words would go under the word 'archives'. I have started by thinking of something that was historical or old, my first word was 'records' then I was thinking of something that would be kept for a long time and 'historical make-up' popped into my head. The word 'archives' to me also associates to old books, magazines or newspapers, so that is also what I wrote down on my mood-board. Another word that I thought of was memories which leads to historical make up looks and Elizabethan make-up. I have also wrote down storage/files which led to university and then make up course. All of the words and concepts had to be related to university or to the course that I am doing so it was definitely a challenge. I cut out all the pictures that related to my word 'archives' so I picked out the images that were all different, from different make up looks to different hair, different age, and more historical because the word 'archives' associates to something that's been kept from now and before. When I had to rearrange all the images I started by putting the images that had the most natural make up and hair and going to the most extreme hair or make up that the image had.
